A cover of a Billy Connolly song by the late Shane MacGowan has resurfaced. The song in question, “Her Father Didn’t Like Me Anyway,” was originally written by Gerry Rafferty during his time with The Humblebums, a folk-pop duo he co-founded with Billy Connolly in 1965.
For those unfamiliar with The Humblebums, they were a sensational act in Glasgow’s pubs and clubs during the late ’60s. The band evolved when Gerry Rafferty joined in 1969, and although they initially performed as a trio, the dynamics changed, leading to Tam Harvey’s departure. The band’s first album, “First Collection of Merry Melodies,” was released in February 1969.
Fast forward to 1994, and the iconic Shane MacGowan, renowned for his role in The Pogues, covered Rafferty’s composition with his band, The Popes. However, the news of MacGowan’s passing last week adds a bittersweet note to the resurfacing of this remarkable cover.
