By chance, Andrea Rusted and her friends met James Corden in October at Browns, a posh Cambridge eatery.
Ms. Rusted and her pals were celebrating a birthday at the time. “They gave us a really nice table, and on the next table was James Corden. We were all a bit star-struck,” gushed Ms. Rusted, from Girton, just a stone’s throw from Cambridge.
Andrea explained how the group wasted no time in asking for a photo and “He said, ‘No problem.’ And he just grabbed my phone and started taking selfies with us all.” Indeed, according to Ms. Rusted, James was the life of the party, joking about and making himself right at home.
However, they weren’t just interested in his celeb status but the memorable cliffhanger from the 2019 Gavin and Stacey episode. Many remember Nessa asking Corden’s Smithy the big question, leaving the nation in suspense.
Seizing the moment, Ms. Rusted and co. mustered the courage to make a suggestion. They teased Corden about the proposal, saying, “Tell him to say yes!” In return, he laughed and said, “I haven’t even written anything yet.”
For those unaware, Corden recently left the American Late Late Show and returned to our shores. He fame exploded after portraying Smithy in the sitcom Gavin and Stacey, which he co-created with Ruth Jones. But for those hopeful for more episodes, Corden remains tight-lipped. Whilst chatting at the RTS Cambridge Convention 2023, he candidly shared with the audience, “I genuinely don’t know if we’ll ever do another one.”
All in all, Ms. Rusted’s unexpected brush with fame was the cherry on top of their birthday celebrations, as the unexpected meeting with Corden “made my day”.
