The legendary Billy Connolly once shared his thoughts about his fellow comedians in his retirement special, “It’s Been a Pleasure”. Connolly reflects on his illustrious career and the performers who have left a big mark on the comedy landscape. At the age of 80, Connolly, who announced his retirement from live stand-up in 2018, unveiled his honest opinions about his peers, including a surprising nod to the beloved Peter Kay.

Billy Connolly, who disclosed his battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2013, has rarely been seen in public the last two years. In a 75-minute special on STV, Connolly shared, “Since the Parkinson’s came along, I don’t think as sharply as I need to for that job.” He added, “Quitting is the right thing to do. I feel very content with the decision.”

“It’s Been a Pleasure” not only pays tribute to Connolly’s legacy but also delves into his personal favourites and the highs and lows of his career. Among the revelations, Connolly disclosed his favourite stand-up comedian of all time, the late Chic Murray, whose unique style left a lasting impression on him.

“He was the guv’nor,” Connolly declared. “They spoke about a world that didn’t really exist.”

Billy Connolly’s admiration for comedians extends far and wide. In a heartwarming statement, he expressed his genuine fondness for the comedy community, especially Peter Kay. “I know that sounds like a cop-out answer, but it’s true,” Connolly admitted. “I’ve always liked all comedians. I like guys that perform in little pubs in Govan and Partick. They’re doing the real work. I like Peter Kay. He makes it up as he goes along sometimes, too.”

Billy also believes that it is Peter’s ability to be humorous off the cuff is what separates him from the other comedians. Many comedians are creative geniuses and Peter Kay is both a creative scriptwriter and also a very charismatic, witty person to have in your presence.
